Paragliding FAQ
Everything you might want to know...
How safe is paragliding?
Our commitment to your safety is paramount! Rest assured, we will cancel a flight if there is any doubt as to the weather or other conditions.
Statistically speaking, tandem paragliding (where you fly with an experienced pilot in control at all times) is just as safe as driving a car. Flight safety depends on the skill of the pilot, the condition of the weather, the terrain over which you are flying and the preparedness of your pilot.
Our certified, trained professional pilots each have 9+ years of flight experience and all have 100% accident free flight records. Each pilot has extensive experience piloting in Peruvian terrain: on the coast and in mountainous areas—always flying in cleared areas and only under excellent conditions. All of our pilots fly in areas where they have extensive flight hours logged and are keenly aware of the terrain and prevailing and possible wind conditions.
Our trained, professional pilots assure your safety!
Do I need experience or training to fly?
No previous experience or special knowledge is necessary to safely take to the skies with a Fly Day Peru pilot in control at all times. Your professional pilot will brief you on takeoff and landing procedure (nothing complicated: you may be needed to be able to take a few steps during take-off and landing). You only need to wear sensible shoes, be unimpaired and enjoy!
How long is my adventure and flight?
Your paragliding flight will last on average, about 15 minutes depending on wind conditions and nature. Some flights are a little bit less in length (say, 10 minutes) and some are a bit longer.
While on the ground this may not seem like a super long experience—it really, really is! Your sense of time and other worldly trappings will tend to be suspended while in flight and you are certain to have these moments of excitement, joy and an associated adrenaline rush—from moments of weightlessness to literally feel like a bird—be some of the best remembered times of your life!
About the timing of the whole adventure: There are about a 10 minute briefing on safety, what to do and what to expect so, roughly figure that your flight, briefing and set up time will be one hour. Since you may have a few in your party or there may be other fliers present it is typical to expect and plan this as a half day adventure. Your pilot is both professional and nice so you are going to enjoy the whole time!
Are my friends and family welcome (flyers and watchers?)
You bet! We welcome your friends and family to come along to see you do what makes you amazing and extraordinary! If they don't want to fly—they will need to pay a nominal transportation share.
What times of day do you fly?
This can depend on the location and size of any group. Generally and unless otherwise specified, we leave in the morning to reach the flight area at 10 o'clock in the morning. Flights are done in the early to mid afternoon. We do not fly at night!
What weight, height, age or other restrictions are there?
There are no height restrictions or minimum weight. The maximum passenger weight is 220lbs (100kg). There are no age restrictions (children must have a parent or guardian present) and if you feel up to it at any age, go for it! Many disabilities do not preclude flight (you or your caregiver are likely the best judge of your capabilities), however, please check/arrange with us in advance!
What is tandem flight?
Without any special experience or training, you can take to the skies harnessed to one of our certified, professional paragliding pilots experiencing the wonder of being airborne witnessing spectacular views that can't be gotten by any other means! If you have the desire for an unforgettable Peruvian vacation adventure—from the skies—one of our pilots will take you up safely (using special, properly maintained, tandem flight equipment) where, securely harnessed to the pilot—who is always in control—you'll soar over Peru on a specially designed paragliding wing with a backup parachute to assure your complete safety.
What should I bring?
Water and snacks are recommended. Bringing drinks and any light meal—in case the weather changes and you have to wait for safe flight conditions—to ensure that you are comfortable in a somewhat remote location (you aren't going to be near a store or restaurant). If you need to wait, you'll find your fluent, multilingual pilot fun to chat with and full of interesting knowledge about Peruvian travel, food and culture!
Some of our passengers' best experiences are preceded by hanging out with their pilot as they wait for ideal conditions followed by an amazing and super safe flight! So, bring something to drink (non-alcoholic, please!) and something to munch on and most importantly, relax!
What should I wear to go Paragliding?
Wear, practical shoes and attire, like: sneakers or flexible boots a sweatshirt and/or windbreaker. Your shoes must be capable of protecting your feet and providing traction for the equivalent of a very brief sprint. Beyond that you need not be overly concerned about what you should wear while tandem paragliding. We provide all of the equipment and your helmet.
There is often a great deal of questions about what to wear so to satisfy almost everyone: high heels, flip flops, open-toed shoes and sandals are not allowed. It could be warm and comfy on the ground, though, it can get cold and it is usually windier up there. So, a jacket that has good wind protection will ensure that you are both comfortable and that you can focus on the amazing aerial view of: mountains, beaches, oceans, rivers, trees, valleys, canyons, clouds, the sunlight, the moon (if it is a lunar present day!) and so much more!
Do wear: pants, socks, long sleeves, a sweater with a windbreaker, a medium to warm jacket, or other wind protective, snug thermal layers; avoid wearing: loose and open clothing and uncovered skin.
Wear sunglasses if you want and carry a camera or phone (batteries charged!) though, we recommend having these out only when attached around your neck or wrist with a suitable lanyard or cord (you can pick up cord for 20 cents at most dry goods merchants–look for a store that sells plastic containers, rolls of plastic, or other hardware).
What is a takeoff like?
Don't worry about having to do anything complicated or difficult! Your professional pilot will talk with you before the flight and it is part of their expertise to ensure that you understand what is going to happen and know anything that you will need to do. For the most part: you need to follow the pilot's instructions by running a few steps as directed when it is needed for the moment of the takeoff. Nothing more! Then, relax and enjoy the flight!
What is landing like?
Before takeoff a harness is adjusted to you which includes padding—essentially, your bottom side is in a padded cocoon—this, aerodynamics, and pilot skill ensure a soft landing! During your decent the paraglide moves somewhat rapidly and at the point of touchdown braking is applied and you are softly and gently brought back in contact with the ground.
Unlike an aircraft, which is still moving at amazing speed upon touchdown (the airplane weight to wing lift ratio demands this) with a paraglider the weight is so offset by the wing capacity you are able to touchdown with very little forward or downward motion! It is similar to stepping off an escalator.
